Five is taught in three parts: pull straight down, curve out the round belly, then lift the pencil and put the flat hat on top LAST. Writing the hat first is the classic cause of a backwards 5.

Chant 'down, around, hat on top' while tracing — the order of the strokes is the whole trick with this number.
