Zero is one smooth oval: start at the top, curve left all the way around and close where you began — the same motion as the letter O. Keep it tall and narrow rather than round, so it never gets mistaken for the letter.

Zero is also the strangest number to count: there is nothing to point at. Try 'how many elephants are in the room?' — hearing that the answer is a number too is an early piece of real mathematics.

When 0 feels automatic on its own, the 1–10 sheet mixes it back in with its neighbours — recognising it in a line-up is the next step after writing it alone.
