Free worksheets covering all eight -at family words — cat, hat, bat, mat, rat, sat, fat and pat — the word family most programs teach first once a child knows short vowel sounds.
About -at word family worksheets
The -at family works by rime: swap the first letter and the rest of the word — the -at sound — stays put. That's why it's the classic starting family after the alphabet and short vowels are down: a child who can read cat already has six-eighths of the decoding work done for hat, bat, mat, rat, sat, fat and pat, without re-learning the vowel each time.
Each generated sheet gives one -at word repeated for tracing and independent writing, so the spelling pattern and the handwriting motion get practiced together rather than as two separate drills. Work through the eight words in order, or pull out just the ones a child is still mixing up before moving on to the next word family.
