About fifth grade spelling words

Words like accomplish, committee and embarrass don't give away their spelling by sound — nothing about how you say them tells you the consonant doubles, or which one. Recommend has one c and two m's for no phonetic reason; exaggerate has a silent-feeling extra g. These have to be learned as shapes to memorise, individually, the same way an adult still checks them.

That's what makes fifth grade the hinge year: it's the last stage where a class sits down and drills spelling as its own subject, before it quietly turns into something a writer just has to get right while proofreading. A word like unfortunately or definitely misspelled in a fifth grade paragraph is the exact same mistake an adult makes in an email — which is why practising these ten by hand, not just recognising them, is worth a dedicated sheet.
