Fourth grade spelling words

Fourth grade spelling lists move into words most adults still get wrong — "necessary" (one c, two s's), "separate" (a rat hiding in the middle, not "seperate"), "particular." These are long enough that sounding them out letter by letter stops working; the skill that actually helps is spotting the smaller unit inside — dis-appear, environ-ment, develop-ment — and getting that unit right instead of guessing at the whole word at once.

The ten words on this sheet also aren't spelling-class-only words — "environment" and "development" show up in science and social studies writing just as often, so getting them automatic here saves a kid from stalling out on them in a report later. That crossover is what makes fourth grade spelling worth a page of its own instead of just harder words on the same third grade sheet.
