About 1 cm dot grid paper

Most dot-grid advice defaults to 5 mm because that is the spacing in the popular pocket-size dotted notebooks everyone talks about. But it is not the only spacing in circulation — larger-format planners and journals are often gridded at 1 cm instead, and if you are printing loose sheets to slot into one of those, a 5 mm page will hand you twice as many dots as the notebook you are trying to match.

The wider spacing also just suits some handwriting better: with a centimetre between reference points there is more open space for a letter to sit before it bumps into the next dot, which is why people who find 5 mm too busy tend to ask for this instead. It is the same logic that makes 1 cm the default for squared graph paper — bigger reference spacing, less visual noise per line of writing.
