Run the judgment drill first: butterfly, heart, square, circle — yes; F, J, a mitten — no. Imagining the fold is the whole skill; everything later is refinement.

Draw the line, then draw the shape

Requiring the drawing exposes the classic error: a diagonal line through a non-square rectangle looks right and is not. Fold it and see.
Count the lines
