Multiplication Facts: How to Help Kids Memorize the Times Tables

Drilling multiplication facts cold is slow and frustrating. The children who recall them quickly almost always understood the patterns first — and those patterns turn a hundred facts into a much smaller pile to actually memorise.

Meaning before memorising

A fact like 4 × 6 means "four groups of six" — or six counted four times. Build it with arrays (four rows of six dots) or real groups before any flashcards appear. A child who can picture the array can rebuild a forgotten fact instead of stalling, which is exactly what you want under pressure.

Skip counting is multiplication in disguise

Counting 5, 10, 15, 20 is already the five times table. Lean on the skip-counting children met with counting and on a hundreds chart, where the multiples of 2, 5 and 10 light up as clean columns and diagonals. Seeing the pattern on the grid makes "× 5 always ends in 0 or 5" obvious rather than a rule to remember.

The commutative shortcut halves the work

Because 7 × 3 and 3 × 7 give the same answer, a child who knows one knows both. Pointing this out genuinely cuts the number of distinct facts to learn roughly in half — worth making explicit early, because many children treat the two as separate problems for far too long.

Teach the anchors first, then hunt the hard facts

The × 2, × 5 and × 10 tables come quickly and unlock a lot, so start there. Once those are solid, the genuinely tricky facts are a short list — 6 × 7, 6 × 8, 7 × 8, 8 × 9 and their partners. Naming that small set ("these are the boss facts") focuses practice where it is actually needed instead of re-drilling facts already known.

Fluency is reliable recall, not a race

The goal is answering without re-deriving every time, not beating a stopwatch. Short, frequent practice — a few minutes most days — beats a long weekly session, and mixing a couple of new facts in with mostly-known ones keeps confidence up. Timed sprints can come later, once recall is steady, and only if they motivate rather than rattle the child.

Frequently asked questions

In what order should the times tables be taught?

A common, effective order is 2, 10, 5, then 4 and 3, then the squares, then the few hard facts (6, 7, 8, 9 combinations). Each builds on patterns from the last, so later tables get easier rather than harder.

Memorise facts or understand them — which matters more?

Both, in order. Understanding (groups, arrays, skip counting) comes first so facts are rebuildable; fluent recall comes second so working memory is free for bigger problems. Skipping understanding makes the memorising slower and more fragile.

How much practice per day?

Five to ten minutes of focused practice most days, ideally mixing a couple of target facts with known ones. Frequent and short beats occasional and long for committing facts to memory.
