Teaching Number Recognition (0–20): A Practical Guide

Number recognition is the ability to look at the symbol 7 and say "seven" — and, just as importantly, to know that 7 stands for seven actual things. Those are two different skills, and a child can have one without the other. Plenty of children can name numerals like flashcards while still not feeling what each number means, and plenty can count a pile of objects accurately while stumbling over the written symbol.

This guide keeps those two threads — the numeral and the quantity — side by side, because real number sense is the bridge between them. The numeral and the quantity are two different skills

It helps to name the two jobs clearly. Naming the numeral is recognising the written symbol and saying its name. Understanding the quantity is knowing how many that symbol represents. The most valuable early-maths work constantly links the two: every time you show the symbol 5, show five things next to it, and every time you count five objects, show the symbol that names them.

Skip this linking and you can end up with a child who recites and recognises numbers like a song but freezes when asked "show me five" with a handful of counters. Keep the symbol and the set together and the bridge builds itself.

Start small and go in a sensible order

Do not try to cover 0–20 at once. A workable path is to anchor 1–5 thoroughly first (these come up constantly and are easy to subitise), then extend to 10, then treat the teens as their own separate project. Within each step, move through a predictable cycle rather than jumping straight to the symbol.

  • Count it: count out the quantity with real objects, one touch per count
  • Show it: place the matching numeral card beside the set
  • Name it: say the numeral name and trace its shape with a finger
  • Match it: mix up numeral cards and sets and pair them back together
  • Find it: spot that numeral out in the world — doors, clocks, page numbers

Do not forget zero

Zero is genuinely abstract — it is the number for "none", and "none" is hard to point at. Children often learn 1–10 with zero quietly missing, which causes confusion later when it suddenly matters for place value.

Teach zero through absence and removal: count three crackers, eat them one by one, and land deliberately on "now there are zero". An empty plate, an empty cup, an empty hand — naming zero in those moments makes the idea concrete long before the symbol needs to do any heavy lifting.

The teens are the hard part — treat them separately

English teen words fight the child at every turn. Eleven and twelve give no hint of "ten and one, ten and two". Thirteen through nineteen say the ones digit first ("four-teen") even though we write the ten first (14), so the word and the symbol run in opposite directions. None of this is the child being slow — the language is genuinely irregular here.

Make the structure visible with a ten-frame (a two-by-five grid): fill one whole frame to show ten, then add extras alongside, so 14 is plainly "ten and four more". Pair the full ten-frame with the spoken word and the written numeral together. Expect the teens to take noticeably longer than 1–10 did, and that is completely normal.

Recognising numbers vs writing them

Recognising and naming a numeral comes well before forming it neatly with a pencil — and understanding what numbers mean matters far more, early on, than tidy handwriting. A child who deeply gets quantities but writes a wobbly 5 is in a much stronger position than one with neat numerals and no number sense.

When you do introduce number formation, use the same correct-strokes principle as letter writing: a clear start point (a start dot helps) and a consistent path, so the movement becomes automatic. Reversed numerals — a backwards 3 or 7 — are common in this age range and usually fade with practice; keep modelling the correct direction rather than drilling corrections.

What is the difference between number recognition and counting?

Counting is the verbal and physical act of enumerating objects — one, two, three as you touch each one. Number recognition is identifying the written symbol and knowing its name and value. They support each other, and the best activities link them, but a child can be ahead on one and still building the other.

In what order should I teach numbers 0–20?

Anchor 1–5 first, extend to 10, then handle the teens (11–20) as a separate stage because the words are irregular. Weave zero in through "none" and removal. Throughout, keep pairing each numeral with the quantity it represents rather than teaching the symbols in isolation.

My child can count but cannot recognise the written numbers — is that normal?

Yes, this is very common. Counting aloud and recognising symbols are different skills, and many children count confidently before the numerals click. Keep showing the numeral right alongside the quantity — count five objects, then point to the 5 — and recognition catches up with the counting.

Should I use flashcards?

Flashcards can help with naming the symbols, but on their own they only train half the skill. Pair any card work with real quantities — match a numeral card to that many counters — so the child connects the symbol to a meaning rather than memorising shapes in a vacuum.
