Teaching Kids to Count Money: Coins to Making Change (Ages 5-8)

Money is the rare math topic where kids supply their own motivation — every child wants to know if they have "enough". But money is also sneaky-hard: a dime is physically smaller than a nickel yet worth more, and counting mixed coins means switching skip-count patterns mid-stream.

This guide is the order that works: coin identification, one coin type at a time, mixed coins from the biggest coin down, then prices, adding and change — all in cents, no decimals, which is exactly where ages 5-8 should live.

Why cents-first (and decimals later)

Writing $1.32 requires decimal place value, which is a grade 4-5 concept. Writing 132 cents requires nothing a 2nd grader does not already own. Working entirely in cents lets kids do REAL money math years before decimals — and the conversion later is a single lesson, not a wall.

It also keeps the arithmetic honest: change from a dollar is just 100 minus the price, which doubles as the best subtraction-with-regrouping practice a kid can get.

The teaching order

  • 1. Coin names and values — sort real coins; play "show me the nickel". The dime-is-smaller-but-worth-more confusion is normal; name it out loud.
  • 2. One coin type at a time — count piles of only pennies (by 1s), only nickels (by 5s), only dimes (by 10s), only quarters (by 25s). This is skip counting wearing a costume.
  • 3. Mixed coins, biggest first — teach kids to sort coins largest-value-first, then count down: quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies. "25, 50, 60, 65, 66."
  • 4. Prices and "enough" — is 50 cents enough for a 35-cent sticker? Comparison before computation.
  • 5. Adding two prices — a 45-cent toy and a 30-cent card is a two-digit addition problem kids WANT to solve.
  • 6. Change from a dollar — the capstone: 100 minus the price, with real regrouping.

Use real coins (screens can wait)

Money is one topic where physical beats printed or digital: the size-versus-value confusion only resolves in the hand. Keep a jar of real coins for the counting stages, then move to paper for the applying stages — worksheets are where prices, comparisons and change live, because those are thinking problems, not sorting problems.

A ten-minute "shop" at the kitchen table — sticky-note prices on toys, a cup of coins, you as the cashier who sometimes gives WRONG change to be caught — outperforms an hour of drill.

What trips kids up (and the fixes)

  • Counting mixed coins in grab order → teach the sort-biggest-first habit explicitly; it removes the mid-stream pattern switch.
  • The nickel-dime value flip → side-by-side comparison with the sizes named: "smaller coin, bigger value".
  • Switching skip counts (25, 50... then dimes) → have them say the running total out loud; silence is where the thread gets lost.
  • Change anxiety → teach counting UP from the price to the dollar first ("62... 65, 75, 100 — that is 38 cents"), then connect it to subtraction.

Frequently asked questions

What age should kids learn to count money?

Coin names around 4-5, single-coin-type counting once skip counting starts (typically 1st grade), mixed coins and making change in 2nd grade. The real prerequisite is skip counting by 5s, 10s and 25s — money is skip counting with stakes.

Should I teach dollars and decimals at the same time?

No — keep everything in cents through 2nd grade. Decimal notation needs place-value ideas that arrive years later; cents-only lets kids do genuine money math now and makes the decimal conversion trivial when it comes.

My child can count each coin type but falls apart on mixed piles. Why?

Mixed piles force a skip-count pattern switch mid-count, which overloads working memory. The fix is procedural: sort biggest-value-first before counting, and say the running total aloud. The struggle usually disappears within a week of sorted counting.

What is the best way to practice making change?

Count UP from the price to the amount paid — the way cashiers historically did it. It converts subtraction into friendly addition steps and gives immediate purpose to the make-ten skills from earlier math.
