How to Teach Regrouping in Addition & Subtraction (Without Tears)

Regrouping — carrying in addition, borrowing in subtraction — is the first place many kids decide they are "bad at math". They usually are not. They were just asked to do four new things at once: hold place value in their head, work right-to-left, track a little carried number, and keep neat columns.

The fix is sequencing. Teach one new thing per session, in the order below, and regrouping becomes a set of small wins instead of a wall.

Before anything: make sure place value is solid

Regrouping is place value in action. If a child cannot instantly tell you that 47 is 4 tens and 7 ones, regrouping will feel like a magic trick with arbitrary rules. Spend a day or two on tens-and-ones warm-ups first — base-ten blocks, drawings of sticks and dots, or a quick "how many tens? how many ones?" oral drill.

A useful check: ask what the 1 you "carry" actually is. A child with solid place value will eventually tell you it is a ten. That single realization converts the whole procedure from ritual to reasoning.

The addition sequence: four steps, one page each

  • Step 1 — No regrouping at all (23 + 14). Pure column practice; builds the right-to-left habit while everything stays easy.
  • Step 2 — Regroup the ones only (27 + 15). The ones make a ten; the ten moves left. Say it out loud every time: "12 ones is 1 ten and 2 ones."
  • Step 3 — Regroup the tens only (64 + 52). Same move one column over; the sum crosses 100 and nothing else changes.
  • Step 4 — Regroup twice (67 + 58). Only now. Kids who reach this page after the first three almost never struggle here.

The subtraction sequence: borrowing, then the zeros trap

Mirror the same staircase: no-borrow warm-up, then borrowing from the tens, then the special case everyone trips on — subtracting from round numbers like 70, 80 and 100. Across-zeros problems deserve their own session because the borrow has to travel: there are no ones AND no tens to borrow from until you regroup twice.

Keep the language consistent. If you say "borrow" at home and the teacher says "regroup" at school, tell the child they are the same move. Inconsistent vocabulary reads as two different skills to a 7-year-old.

Teach the addition check — it builds self-correcting kids

Subtraction has a built-in answer key: add your answer back to what you took away, and you should land on the number you started with (46 − 18 = 28, and 28 + 18 = 46). Kids who learn this check stop asking "is this right?" and start verifying on their own — which is the real goal.

Make the check a habit on two or three problems per page, not all of them. It should feel like a power move, not a punishment.

How much practice, and when to stop

Little and often beats marathon sessions: one focused page a day (8 problems) for two or three weeks outperforms a 40-problem packet on Saturday. Stop each session while the child is still succeeding — ending on a hard failure is how math anxiety compounds.

When mixed pages (some regrouping, some not) come back consistently correct, the skill is owned. Move on, and revisit with a quick page every few weeks to keep it warm.

Frequently asked questions

What age or grade should regrouping be taught?

Typically late 1st grade through 2nd grade for addition, with subtraction regrouping following in 2nd grade. Readiness matters more than the calendar: solid tens-and-ones place value and fluent single-digit facts are the real prerequisites.

My child adds left to right and gets confused. Is that wrong?

Left-to-right is actually great mental math, but the column algorithm assumes right-to-left so the regrouped ten has somewhere to go. Teach the written method right-to-left, and welcome left-to-right thinking as an estimation check ("about how big should the answer be?").

Should kids use base-ten blocks or just the written method?

Both, in that order. A few sessions of physically trading ten ones for a ten-rod gives the written carry meaning. Drop the blocks once the child can explain what the carried 1 is — keeping them forever slows fluency.

How do I know if errors are regrouping errors or fact errors?

Look at WHERE the mistake lives. If 7 + 8 comes out as 14, that is a fact-fluency gap — drill doubles and near doubles. If the ones are right but the carried ten vanishes, that is the regrouping procedure — slow down and narrate the trade out loud.
