A child who reads clocks perfectly can still fall apart on "soccer starts at 4:00 and ends at 5:30 — how long is practice?" That is because elapsed time is not a clock skill at all. It is subtraction in a number system nobody warned them about: base 60, where 70 minutes is not a thing you write.

Draw time as a line, not a circle
The clock face is great for reading time and terrible for measuring it. Draw a straight line, mark the start time on the left and the end time on the right, and the question "how long?" becomes a distance — something kids already know how to count.
From 4:00 to 5:30: one big jump of an hour lands on 5:00, one jump of 30 minutes lands on 5:30. Total: 1 hour 30 minutes. Every problem in this topic yields to that picture.
The three problem types — teach them separately
- END unknown: "starts at 2:15, lasts 2 hours — when does it end?" Jump forward. Easiest, teach first.
- START unknown: "ends at 5:00 after 3 hours — when did it start?" Jump backward. Same picture, reversed.
- DURATION unknown: "from 8:30 to 3:00 — how long?" Count the jumps between two fixed points. Hardest, teach last.

Avoid the subtraction algorithm (5:30 minus 4:45 in columns) until the number-line picture is automatic; column subtraction across the 60-minute boundary is where the infamous "85 minutes past" errors are born.
What trips kids up (and the fixes)
- Treating minutes like base-10 (getting 1:70 as an answer) → the number line makes the 60-minute rollover physical instead of procedural.
- Counting the starting hour ("from 2:00 to 5:00 is 4 hours because 2,3,4,5") → count the JUMPS between marks, not the marks themselves.
- Crossing 12 ("from 11:00 to 2:00") → jump to 12:00 first, then keep going; the line handles it, the algorithm does not.
- Mixing up AM and PM in word problems → keep early practice inside one afternoon or one morning; add day boundaries much later.
