Why strategy beats memorization
Pure flash-card memorization treats every fact as an island: 121 things to store, each one forgettable. Strategy-based fluency stores a few big ideas instead — and a child who owns "doubles plus one" instantly has 6 + 7 the moment 6 + 6 is automatic.
The other reason: strategies survive stress. Under test pressure a memorized fact can vanish, but a derivation path ("7 + 8… that is 7 + 7 and one more… 15") is always reconstructible. Fluency built this way degrades gracefully instead of collapsing.
The strategy order
- 1. Plus 0 and plus 1 — a number line intuition, learned in days.
- 2. Counting on (+2, +3) — start from the BIGGER number and count up; this alone quietly covers a third of the table.
