Why colour by code actually teaches
A normal colouring page is a rest. A colour-by-code page is practice that happens to be enjoyable — and, unusually for a worksheet, it checks itself. If a child cannot find their answer in the key, they know immediately that something has gone wrong. If the picture starts looking wrong, that is a second signal. The feedback arrives while they are still working, without anyone marking anything.
That is why teachers reach for these for morning work, early finishers, homework and cover lessons. The child gets repetition on one skill — 5 to choose from here, from number bonds to ten through the first four times tables — and the repetition does not feel like a drill.
