Rhyme, stanza, imagery — the three poetry terms every elementary reading test asks about, and the three most kids have never practiced on paper. Kids start small: read couplets and mark AA or AB, then decode full four-line rhyme schemes (AABB, ABAB, AAAA, even ABAC) from line endings. Next comes structure — eight quick stanza questions (lines vs stanzas, couplets, quatrains) and a close read of an original two-stanza autumn poem: count the stanzas, map the rhyme scheme, find the image that paints the picture. Then imagery gets hands-on: sort ten phrases into I-can-SEE-it vs I-can-HEAR-it columns, name the sense behind eight lines of poetry, and write six sensory lines of your own.
