How to Write a Resume That Gets Interviews

8 min readUpdated June 2026

A resume has one job: get you the interview. It is a marketing document, not an autobiography — and most resumes fail because they list duties instead of proving impact, or get filtered out by software before a human ever reads them.

This guide covers the structure that works, how to write bullet points that land, and how to format so both the software and the hiring manager say yes.

The structure that works

Lead with a short summary of who you are and the value you bring, then experience (most recent first), then skills and education. Keep it to one page early-career, two at most later. Recruiters skim in seconds — the top third of page one has to make your case.

Write achievements, not duties

"Responsible for managing social media" describes a duty anyone in the role had. "Grew Instagram following 40% in six months by shifting to short-form video" proves impact. Use the formula: action verb + what you did + the result, with a number wherever you honestly can. Numbers make accomplishments concrete and believable.

Tailor to the job — and the software

Most companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) that scan for relevant keywords before a human sees your resume. Read the job description and mirror its language for the skills you genuinely have. Tailoring each application beats one generic resume sent everywhere — it both ranks higher in the ATS and reads as a better fit.

Format clean, not clever

Fancy columns, text boxes and graphics often confuse the ATS and get your text scrambled or skipped. A clean, single-column, well-spaced layout with standard headings reads perfectly for both software and humans. Our resume and CV templates are designed to look polished while staying ATS-safe — the balance that actually gets you read.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a resume be?

One page for early-career and most roles; two pages once you have a decade of relevant experience. Length is not the goal — relevance is. Cut anything that does not help you get this specific interview.

What is an ATS and why does it matter?

An applicant tracking system is software most employers use to scan and rank resumes before a person reviews them. If your formatting is too complex or you lack the job's keywords, you can be filtered out automatically — which is why clean formatting and tailored keywords matter.

Should I use a resume template?

Yes — a good template gives you a proven, readable structure so you focus on the words, not the layout. Just make sure it is a clean, single-column design that an ATS can read, not a heavily graphic one.
